Through the GroundHog "underground" news, we have learned that there will be one less set of eyes watching our activity here on the "property." Recently, we gathered some local produce from our neighbors and enjoyed it together during a gathering with some friends. With more of the activity focused on the inside of the house, we find ourselves enjoying the remaining days of summer with little need to worry about molestation. In fact, many of us have started to suggest that the current residents find us quite charming and fun to watch. I hope they plant a large garden next spring. Before long we will gather again in our dens and enjoy a long winter of breeding. Here's to good times ahead.

Survey Results Are Telling...
The results are in and it is a telling measure of the Groundhog Chronicle readership. We are happy to report that 72% of the respondents suggested they would join the Groundhog Watchers Association. Combined with 9% of the respondents who reported they would join P.E.T.A, the survey demonstrated that 81% of the participants maintained a sympathetic or complementary attitude towards the growing "underground" movement. While it is somewhat disconcerting that 18% of the participants reported to be "mean people," we recognize that many factors, including senility, literacy, alopecia, stenosis, Viagra dependency, chondroititis, and plantarfascitis, often contribute to various levels of "meanness" in a small sample of any online survey. Later in the week, GHC will be posting a new survey.

It's Official
With all of the announcements taking place around the homestead, I thought it was important to keep all of the GroundHog Chronicle readers informed about the doings "down under." Yesterday, one of our own brought another clan into our midst, announcing their formal decision to dig a few burrows together. Rather than simply sharing our fields, these two decided to join together, locating a nice place on the other side the pond to dig themselves a new beginning together. As you can imagine, we are all very excited to learn about their commitment to each other particularly as they begin to plan their futures together. I'm sure there will be many more announcements in the coming months as holes are dug, friends are made, and the new clan is welcomed into the neighborhood. As long as the "above ground" dwellers remain on the porch, I'm sure we will see a significant growth in our numbers in the coming years.GC

DRILL! DRILL! DRILL!
Recently, there has been a lot of talk about the importance of drilling our way out of problems, drilling underground for important resources. All of my compadres understand how a hole drilled here or there offers a good solution for many problems. Given our propensity to drill a few holes to provide shelter from the storms of life, we truly appreciate how those with a concern for necessary drilling always want to sit on the retirement porch of conservation and restrict us from the resources we need. So, if you are pro drilling, please recognize that the most successful community of drillers tend to flitter back and forth across freshly mowed fields rather than the deep waters off the continental shelf. We've got your back, however, as you wrestle with the non-drillers. GC

Short Sellers and the Fed
After sticking my head up to check the lay of the land, I recognized that a great deal of energy has been given to debate the necessity of short sellers and the Fed's current intervention. First, let me say that "I know short." To correctly appreciate the challenges facing short sellers, one has to understand how the world looks much different from a vertically-challenged point of view. There never seems to be any concern about tall sellers or even medium sellers. It's always the short sellers that seem to get the Fed's attention. And, while I'm at it, I think some negative vibes need to be directed to the Fed and their leader chairman Bernake. By the way, if you haven't noticed, he has a striking resemblance to our leader, RamboHog. While the fields are burning, it seems the Fed's chairman is plucking his fiddle on the porch of retiremental bliss. (it's somewhat disconcerting that the word construction or "retiremental" seems to combine retire and mental--truly a GHC nuance for sure). Nevertheless, the GHC is committed to a peaceful existence for above and below ground dwellers, given that most above ground dwellers will eventually join those of us below the matted earth. GC
